Different city. Different friend group. Different job. Different person entirely.

A narcissist's nervous system runs on external supply. They need someone to mirror them,manage their emotions,and reflect their version of reality back to them. Without that supply they fall apart.
An empath's nervous system is built to do exactly that. You read the room. You sense what people need. You adjust yourself to keep things stable. You do it before you're even asked.
You're not attracting them in some mystical way. You're broadcasting on the exact frequency they're hunting for.
<h2>What they pick up about you</h2>
Within minutes of meeting them,they've clocked three things.
You'll do the emotional labor. You'll smooth conflict instead of pressing into it. You'll question your own perception before you question theirs.
These aren't flaws. They're survival skills from your childhood. The problem is they make you the perfect target for someone who needs constant management.
A securely attached person with strong boundaries won't tolerate the patterns long enough for the narcissist to settle in. You will. Not because you're weak. Because your system was trained to.
<h2>The four phases</h2>
This always plays out in the same order.
Phase one. Idealization. They love bomb you. Tell you you're different. Mirror your interests. Make you feel finally seen.
Phase two. Devaluation. The criticism starts. Small at first. You can't quite point to anything specific. Just feels off. You start questioning yourself.
Phase three. Discard or hover. They pull away. Maybe leave entirely. Maybe stay but go cold. You start chasing the version of them from phase one.
Phase four. Return or replace. They come back love bombing again. Or they find a new supply and move on. Either way you're left wondering what just happened.

<h2>Why you stay longer than you should</h2>
Three reasons,in this order.
You think it's your job to fix it. Your nervous system has been managing other people's emotions since childhood. The harder it gets,the more you double down on managing. You don't leave. You try harder.
The good moments are real. Phase one was real. Even when phase two arrives,the memory of phase one keeps you hoping it'll come back. Sometimes it does. Briefly. That intermittent reward is one of the most addictive patterns the human brain has.
You don't trust your own perception. By the time you'd normally leave,you've been gaslit enough that you don't believe what you see anymore. You wait. You hope. You blame yourself. You stay.
None of this is weakness. It's exactly what your nervous system was trained to do. Which means it's also what you can untrain.
<h2>How to actually stop the cycle</h2>
You don't stop it by scanning new people for red flags.
You stop it by changing what your nervous system broadcasts.
Three things break the cycle.
You stop performing safety as fast.
When you meet someone new,you've probably been trained to immediately make them comfortable. You smile. You adjust. You laugh at things that aren't funny. You read their state and align with it.
Stop doing that as a reflex. Let yourself be a little awkward. Let there be silence. Don't rush to make them feel okay.
Healthy people will adjust to your pace. Narcissists need you to manage them and will leave fast when you stop doing it automatically.
You start trusting your first gut reaction.
Empaths often get a clear read on someone in the first thirty seconds and then talk themselves out of it. The doubt sounds reasonable. "I shouldn't judge so fast." "Maybe I'm projecting." "They probably had a bad day."
The first read is usually right. Your sensitivity is data. Stop arguing with it.
You stop explaining yourself.
Healthy people don't need long explanations for your boundaries. Narcissists demand them. The explanation gives them material to use against you later.
Practice saying no without justifying. "I can't do that." Full stop. No paragraph.
If someone is angry that you didn't elaborate,that's the test passing. Healthy people accept short answers.
<h2>The deeper shift</h2>
The real change happens when you stop being available to manage other people's emotions as a default.
Not because you're cold. Because you've finally turned the radar off when it doesn't need to be on.
This is hard at first. Your whole nervous system was built to scan. Putting it down feels like failing. It isn't. It's the work.
When you stop performing emotional management,three things happen.
The narcissists in your life become bored. They drift away. They find someone easier.
The healthy people in your life don't notice much difference because they weren't relying on your scanning anyway.
The mixed people,the ones who got something from your scanning but aren't full narcissists,often shift. They have to start managing themselves. Some grow. Some don't. Either way you stop being their regulator.

Can someone change from being a narcissist?
Rarely. Real narcissism is a personality structure,not a phase. Some people with narcissistic traits can grow significantly with serious work. Full Narcissistic Personality Disorder very rarely shifts.
What if I'm the narcissist?
The fact that you're asking probably means you're not. People with NPD almost never wonder if they have it. Sensitive people sometimes worry they're the bad one in dynamics where they were actually being mistreated.
Is every difficult person a narcissist?
No. The word gets overused. Most difficult people are just regulating poorly,defending themselves,or stuck in patterns. Save the term for the actual structure.
Can I stay in a relationship with a narcissist if I just build better boundaries?
Sometimes. With significant skill,distance,and acceptance that the relationship will never be what you wanted. Most empaths who try this find their nervous system tells them to leave once they finally have capacity to listen.
How long does it take to break the pattern?
The recognition can happen in weeks. The rewiring takes months to years. Be patient with yourself. You learned this pattern over a lifetime.
