You are sitting in your car in the parking lot. You have been staring at the steering wheel for twenty minutes. You have a list of tasks in your notes app that is three miles long. You believe that if you finish every single one, you will finally feel that sense of relief. You think that if you achieve that one specific goal, you will finally be allowed to stop running.
But you have been running for years.
This is the hidden cost of what you call purpose. It has become a way to keep the mind busy. When you are busy, you do not have to feel the emptiness. When you are chasing a future goal, you do not have to look at the fact that you are not happy in the present. The monkey mind loves this. It keeps you focused on a finish line that moves every time you get close to it.
The demon in your head tells you that if you just work harder, or if you find the right business model, or if you reach that specific level of success, then you will be free. That is a lie. That is just the mind trying to keep you away from yourself.
I see people every day who are exhausted. They come to me and say they are burned out from their mission. They feel guilty for being tired. They think something is wrong with them because they are not enjoying the climb. I understand you are tired. It is really tiring.
The problem is that you are trying to fill an internal void with external achievements. You think the goal is the destination. You think the result is the medicine. But the emptiness is real. You have to find where it comes from. You have to give yourself what you tried to fill it with.
Most people try to fix this by changing their schedule. They wake up earlier. They try new productivity hacks. They push harder because they think the wall they hit is just a lack of discipline. It is not a lack of discipline. It is a sign that you are living for a story that is not yours.
You do not fix yourself. You remember yourself.
Healing does not have to take long. It does not have to include suffering. A lot of doctors and healers say months and years of bullshit. It is just not true. With the right tools, healing can happen in an hour. Sometimes half an hour.
You have to change the story to change the feeling. When the feeling shifts, the behavior changes on its own. You stop needing to prove yourself to the world because you finally gave yourself the permission you were waiting for.
I remember a client who spent years trying to build a brand that was supposed to make her feel important. She was miserable. She was working until midnight every night. During our session, we looked at why she felt she needed to be seen. We found the moment as a child where she felt invisible. She had been carrying that child into her boardroom for years. She was not building a business. She was trying to get her parents to finally look at her.
Once she realized that, the need to chase the goal vanished. She did not quit her work, but she stopped using it as a drug. She became free because she was no longer doing it to fill a hole. She was doing it because she chose to.
Your brain takes you to the past and the future. Your present brings you home. The here and now is where your life actually happens.
When was the first time you felt like you had to achieve something just to be worth something? As a child? What was the situation?
